Sports Bridge Closure

The Sports bridge will be closed until essential maintenance works to the bridge are complete. At present, we do not have a concrete timeline for repair. This will be communicated once a schedule has been agreed.

October 2023 Update

The decision to take the Sports Bridge out of use was made in 2022 on the recommendation of Structural Engineers who undertook a detailed inspection following the discovery of extensive corrosion to steelwork on the North Access Tower.  Whilst the structure is not considered to be at risk of collapse, we have been advised the upper deck is unsafe for use and the extent of corrosion to structural steelwork is such that the entire structure will need to be demolished and rebuilt.  We have appointed a team of external consultants who are currently working on a design for the replacement access tower. The scaffold was erected to facilitate further investigation and inspections which are now complete, allowing the scaffold to be removed.  Fencing will remain in place around the access tower until it is demolished and re-built, although we do not currently expect work to commence this academic year.  In the meantime we are working closely with Network Rail and specialist consultants to organise detailed inspections of both the Sports Bridge and the Arts Bridge.  The inspections will allow us to assess the condition of both bridges and identify remedial works which may be required.  The intention is to undertake any identified works to the Sports Bridge prior to completion of the new North Access Tower.

Signage will be in place to direct campus users to the appropriate route. Access across campus will be maintained via the Arts Bridge and Eastern Approach.

Updates will be posted on this page and on the Estates Instagram.
