Place-based climate action and climate commissions: an open discussion – Friday 17 Nov 10:00 – 13:00 INB1103 (Isaac Newton Building)

Climate emergency declarations have refocused UK policy attention towards environment and sustainability place-shaping agendas. Consequentially, climate commissions have arisen across the UK to support such agendas. UK government climate mitigation and adaptation policy attention will coalesce around the Net Zero Strategy, the recent Net Zero review, the National Adaptation Programme and the Third Climate Change Risk Assessment. But with Rishi Sunak’s Conservative government recently doing a U-turn on net zero policies, what role does place-based climate action have in the policy and governance landscape? Do climate commissions now have a more enhanced role in facilitating greater place-based climate action? This Climate Action Festival session brings together local stakeholders for themed talks on the role of different stakeholders in place-based climate action, followed by a public Q&A discussion with the audience on the role that climate commissions can play in facilitating place-based action in Lincoln. This session will cover questions, including:

· What roles do climate commissions have in the wider international and national climate policy landscape?

· What are UK climate commissions doing to address local climate change through the lens of ‘place-shaping’?

· What types of approaches and innovations are commissions taking, or need to take, when engaging the public through place-based climate action?

· Do climate commissions carry significant influence in shaping local climate policy and governance?

These themed talks will then be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A where the panellists and the audience can explore key questions around how best a climate commission can serve the residents of Lincoln.

Full programme.
