Fast fashion is one of the largest contributors to global warming and is responsible for 8–10% of global carbon emissions per year. Our aim is to unravel the fast fashion system that has been woven into our society and start making fashion more sustainable. Clothes swaps, chairty donations/ purchases, and upcycling of clothing are small changes that make a big difference.”

Climate Action & Ecological Justice in Diverse Contexts: a research and scholarship showcase

This research showcase session, sponsored by the Lincoln Centre for Ecological Justice, will present five easy-to-digest 15-minute presentations from academics and researchers from across the University of Lincoln doing research and scholarship broadly related to climate action and ecological justice in diverse contexts. These presentations will then be followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A exploring how research on climate action in diverse contexts can create a more equitable and just society.

Research presentations chaired by Dr Andrew Kythreotis:

  • Dr Matthew Hannaford (Dept of Geography and Lincoln Centre for Ecological Justice): Climate coloniality: Histories, knowledges and materialities of climate adaptation in southern Africa.
  • Dr Andy Brookes (Lincoln International Business School): Sustainability – time for an alternative narrative.
  • Dr Pietro Di Paola (School of History and Heritage): Contamination of aquifers by PFAS and local communities’ mobilisations in North Italy.
  • Dr Alessia Vacca (School of Law): Climate Change, Sustainable Textiles and Energy Efficiency
  • Dr Julian Clifton (Dept of Geography): Ensuring fairness and equity in carbon and biodiversity credit schemes

“Climate action in diverse contexts requires tailored approaches that consider the unique social, economic, political, technical, and environmental challenges of different geographies. For example, in developing countries, efforts often focus on adapting to the impacts of climate change and building resilience, while in developed nations, the emphasis may be on reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to renewable energy. Likewise Indigenous communities contribute traditional knowledge to conservation, while urban areas prioritise green infrastructure and sustainable transportation. Effective climate action therefore involves collaboration across scales, sectors, organisations, and cultures, ensuring inclusive, just, and equitable principles.”

Using UN Sustainable Development Goals – Development Workshop

Join Professor Libby John for a Development Workshop on the SDGs during this year’s Climate Action Festival!

Using the UN Sustainable Development Goals as inspiration for a brighter future. Sustainability is recognised through the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to incorporate social, environmental and economic change to lead to a more equitable world where people and the planet are healthy into the future. All of our programmes link to these goals for a better future for all of us. Use this session to explore how you can incorporate these goals into your existing or future teaching – using inclusivity and authenticity as guiding principles. Take away some actions for quick changes and longer term projects to help your students see how they can be part of delivering that better future.

Whilst this workshop is focussed on teaching, we welcome students also – this could be your opportunity to feed back to your teachers what you’d like to see taught!

Professor Libby John is the Dean of Sustainability at the University of Lincoln, when she’s not leading on coordinating SDG impact at Lincoln or as the Chair-elect of the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, as a passionate ecologist, she spends her free time identifying wildflowers and cycling – having recently cycled to every Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust reserve. 🚲
